Lighting That Creates A High-End, Customized Look for Your Apartment
If you live in an apartment, you are typically limited in the amount of customization you can do, as walls, floors, appliances and the like are generally the purview of the landlord. That is, until now. The lighting industry has come a long way in just the last few years and now you can instantly change a room to match your mood, a special event, time of day or season with a smart light bulb, using color as a design element.
Colors have a subconscious effect on our minds and can have a significant impact on how we feel at home. Blue light affects our circadian rhythms and is therefore ideal for waking up; it also helps in getting over jet lag. Green light has been shown to enhance learning so is great for study time. Warm whites and yellows have a relaxing effect good for promoting sleep. Red, orange and yellow are the first colors a baby sees and a great choice for the nursery.
There are quite a few brands on the market now, but the leaders are LIFX and Hue, which work through an app on your phone and via voice-activated devices. Each bulb manufacturer offers a wide array of customizations — you set your bulbs to mimic the progression of daylight throughout the day, flicker like candle light or even change according to the music you’re listening to or TV show you’re watching.
An extra piece of hardware, a bridge, or an app will allow you to access your lights when you aren’t home – to turn them on just before you arrive home or if you are going to be late so that your home appears occupied.
Third-party apps such as SmartThings, IFTTT, webCORE and others offer even more creative ways to integrate your lighting with other smart devices in your home such as a thermostat, doorbell, alarm and smart outlet.
Smart bulbs are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, for both indoor and outdoor use. They are a bit more expensive than a standard bulb, but are extremely efficient and last a long time.
Bet you never thought you could do so much with the lights in your apartment? So, add some color to your home and make it uniquely yours!
