Where are Clinton vs. Trump Campaign Contributors in Chicago Living? How Much Are They Spending on Rent?

With the Republican Convention wrapping up last week and the Democratic Convention kicking-off last night, we wanted to take a look at where top Trump and Clinton campaign contributors may be residing within certain cities across the U.S., as well as how much they may be spending on rent. The first city to look at? Chicago!

Illinois is known as one of the most democratic states in the country and it certainly isn’t any different within the state’s biggest city. During the presidential primary in Illinois, more than 617,000 Cook County residents (the county that includes Chicago for all you non-Chicagoans) voted for Hillary Clinton. Compare that with only 124,000 residents that voted for Donald Trump (the Republican winner there). Furthermore, Bernie Sanders came in second on the democratic side within Cook County with nearly five-times more votes than Trump.

We wanted to go a step further than voting and see where the biggest contributors for both campaigns within Chicago are living. With the help of data from the Federal Election Commission, RadPad has been breaking down campaign contributions to each party through May 31st in Chicago and across the state. In Illinois, Hillary Clinton out raised Donald Trump 62-1, or $7,112,994 to $115,464 through that time.

As we dug further into the data in Chicago we honed in on the 10 zip codes where campaign contributors gave most (total contribution $’s). While the average number of contributions for Clinton’s campaign within these zip codes was 597 versus just 5 Trump, there were still some interesting findings on the zip codes where the candidates biggest supporters are residing, and what percentage of typical rent payments these supporters need to make up in other income to offset the average contribution they’re giving to campaigns.

Let’s Take a Look at the Map:

chicago-contributions (2)

While there were hundreds to thousands more contributors to Hillary Clinton’s campaign residing within the blue circled zip codes above, they were more concentrated than the ten zip codes where you can find Donald Trump’s top donors (red circles). Clinton’s campaign pulled in the most dollars from supporters living on Lake Shore Drive and alongside Lake Michigan – in the popular and high income areas of Lincoln Park, Old Town, The Gold Coast, The Loop and Navy Pier.

Trump’s largest number of contributions on the other hand came from those residing in the Avondale, Irving Park, Edgerbrook, Back of the Yards and Arcadia Terrace. However, as you can see from some of the overlapping circles on the map, you may still find a few Trump supporters residing in Clinton / Democratic dominated areas alongside Navy Pier, Near North, Lincoln Park, Wrigley and Lake View.

So how much are top campaign contributors paying in rent to reside within these areas? Or how much would you need to pay to live alongside (or far away) from them? Let’s take a look:
